Everybody reaches for size first, and size is reliable when you have a clear example. Distribution is more useful in practice, because it tells you about the animal's behaviour rather than just its dimensions — and behaviour is what a treatment has to work with.

Rats Leave Droppings Along Routes

A rat travels a learned circuit through a known environment, hugging edges and cover. Its droppings accumulate on that circuit and near where it harbours, so they turn up:

• Along the base of a wall, in a line rather than scattered
• Beside pipework, ducting and cable runs
• Around the entrance to a burrow, a void or a gap
• In a shed or garage, concentrated in one corner or behind stored items
• On decking, a patio or a path that forms part of the route
• Near a food source — a bin, a compost heap, a feeder — but on the approach to it rather than everywhere around it

Mice Leave Droppings Everywhere

A mouse ranges over a much smaller area but covers it far more thoroughly, and produces a great deal more. So mouse droppings turn up:

• Scattered widely rather than in a line
• Inside cupboards, drawers and on shelves
• In the backs of kitchen units and behind appliances
• In loft insulation, in stored boxes, in drawers of things nobody has opened
• Among food packaging, often with the packaging itself gnawed
• In places that are enclosed rather than along an open route

What Distribution Also Tells Us

• Where to treat. A route is where equipment goes; scattered droppings mean covering an area rather than a line
• Where the way in is. The heaviest concentration is usually nearest the harbourage or the entry point
• How long it has been going on. A thick accumulation in one spot took time to build
• Whether it is current. Fresh material is dark and pliable; old droppings are grey, dry and crumble

Please Leave Them Where They Are

It is counter-intuitive and it is the most useful thing you can do. The pattern of droppings is the only record of where the animal actually travels, and it cannot be reconstructed once it has been swept up. If hygiene means you have to clear some, photograph the pattern first and leave the rest.

If you have already cleaned, say so — it is not a disaster. It just means the survey works from the structure, the runs and the smear marks instead.
