What Is the Best Way to Deal With Rats in a Cambourne Home or Garden? – Price and Problem Guide

You have seen one, or heard something, or found droppings. The appointment is not until Thursday. This is what to do in between.

Do These

1. Write down what you have seen, where and when. Times of day matter more than people expect: rats are mostly active after dark, and repeated daytime activity says something about how many there are.
2. Photograph anything you find — droppings, gnawing, a hole, a burrow. A photograph settles most identification questions before anybody arrives.
3. Move all food into sealed hard containers, including pet food and bird seed. Plastic tubs with clip lids, not bags.
4. Stop feeding the birds for the moment. Spilled seed is the commonest rat attractant in a domestic garden.
5. Close the bins properly and get bags off the ground.
6. Clear cooked food, meat and bread from the compost.
7. Keep a note of any smell, and where it is strongest.

Do Not Do These

• Do not clear away the droppings. They are the only map of where the activity actually is, and once they are gone the first visit starts from nothing. This is the single most common thing that makes a survey less useful
• Do not block the hole. If there is anything inside, sealing it in produces fresh damage in a new place, and possibly a smell you cannot do much about
• Do not scatter shop-bought bait, particularly outdoors. It is reachable by anything else that forages, it competes with better food, and a half-eaten retail product changes what a professional can do next
• Do not move furniture and appliances back after you have found evidence behind them — leave the access
• Do not deep-clean the affected area beyond what hygiene requires

If the Activity Is Indoors

• Keep food off worktops overnight and out of low cupboards where possible
• Wear gloves if you have to clear anything they have been in contact with, and wash your hands properly afterwards — rats carry organisms that can cause illness, of which leptospirosis is the one usually named
• Do not eat anything they may have reached, including packaged food that has been gnawed
• Keep children and pets out of the affected space if that is practical

If It Is Only the Garden

Then there is less urgency, and the food audit above is most of what matters. Have a proper look for burrows — holes roughly golf-ball sized or larger, often with fresh spoil, usually against a wall, under decking or in a bank — and for flattened runs through vegetation. Those are the difference between an animal passing through and a population living on the property.
