Rat Droppings or Mouse Droppings? How to Tell the Difference in Ely

Before rat or mouse, there is a more useful question: is this happening now, or did it happen at some point in the past?

People find droppings in a loft, under a floor or at the back of a garage and assume an active problem. Frequently there is one. Frequently there is not, and the evidence is a record of something that finished a year ago.

How to Read the Age

FreshOld
ColourDark brown to blackGrey, faded, dusty
SurfaceSlightly shiny when very freshDull and chalky
TextureSoft and pliableHard, dry, crumbles when disturbed
DustSitting on top of any dustUnder the dust, or dusted over
PositionOn surfaces that have been recently disturbed or cleanedIn places nothing has moved for a long time
Do not test them by hand. The colour and the dust are enough. If you must move anything, wear gloves, and wash your hands properly afterwards — rats carry organisms that can cause illness, of which leptospirosis, Weil's disease in its severe form, is the one usually named. It is spread through contact with rat urine rather than the droppings themselves, which is why hands and broken skin are the thing to be careful about.

The Test That Settles It

  1. Pick one small area with a clear accumulation.
  2. Clear it completely — gloves on, damp it down with a disinfectant solution rather than sweeping or vacuuming dry, then double-bag it.
  3. Write down the date.
  4. Leave every other area untouched, so the pattern survives for whoever surveys.
  5. Look again after three or four days.

Anything new is current activity and the question is answered. Nothing new after a week, with no other signs, and you are probably looking at a historic problem — in which case the useful spend is proofing the way in, not a treatment.

Why We Are Telling You How to Avoid Booking Us

Because a treatment on a property with no active rodents does nothing, and we would rather you spent the money on closing the gap that let the last lot in. A property that admitted rodents once will do it again, and that is a proofing job.

When Historic Evidence Still Matters

  • Damaged insulation or gnawed cable from the previous episode is still damaged now
  • The access point is still open, which is why it will recur
  • Contamination in a loft may still want clearing
  • A property you are buying — historic evidence is worth knowing about before you commit
  • A tenancy dispute, where a documented finding at a date is the point of the exercise

Where the identification or the age is genuinely unclear, a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and answers it before you commit to anything.

Common Questions

How can I tell if droppings are old?
Old droppings are grey, dry and crumble when disturbed, and they sit under the dust rather than on top of it. Fresh ones are dark and pliable.
What if I clear them and nothing comes back?
Then you are probably looking at a historic problem. The useful spend at that point is proofing the way in rather than a treatment.
Is it safe to clear droppings up myself?
Wear gloves, damp the area with a disinfectant solution rather than sweeping or vacuuming dry, double-bag the waste and wash your hands properly afterwards.
Do I still need to do anything about historic activity?
Often yes — the access point that let them in is usually still open, and any gnawed cable or damaged insulation from the last episode is still damaged.
