Things That Do Little or Nothing

And the one that surprises people. A shop-bought bait that sits untouched is not proof that the rats have gone. BPCA describe rats as neophobic — they have a fear of new objects — so avoidance in the first few days is the expected behaviour, not a result. People conclude the problem resolved itself, take the bait up, and are back where they started.
Why Retail Products Underperform
- Placement. Put where a rat was seen rather than on the route it travels — along walls, under cover, not across open floor
- Competition. Any bait is competing with whatever else is available
- Quantity and duration. Too little, for too short a time, to get ahead of a population
- Acceptance. New objects get avoided first and investigated later
- Resistance. BPCA cite a University of Reading study finding rats carrying a genetic mutation that makes them resistant to conventional poison, and note resistance growing across parts of the country. That is a national picture, not an Ely one, and we are not going to claim otherwise — but it is a real reason a bait can fail through no fault of the person using it
The Honest Recommendation
For a small amount of outdoor activity with an obvious cause: fix the cause. For anything inside a building, or an established population outdoors, the free actions are still worth doing but they will not finish it on their own.

Does peppermint oil keep rats away?
Not in our experience, and not against anything established. It is one of the more widely repeated pieces of internet advice with the least behind it.
Why did the bait I bought not work?
Usually placement, competition from better food, or simply that rats avoid new objects at first. Resistance to conventional poisons is also documented nationally, and is something assessed rather than assumed.
Is expanding foam any use for blocking holes?
Not on its own — rats gnaw through it. What holds is metal: mesh, plate, or wire wool packed tight and then sealed over.
