Rat Droppings or Mouse Droppings? How to Tell the Difference in March

This is the part most advice skips. The identification matters, but sooner or later somebody has to clean the cupboard — and there is a right way to do that.

First, Wait If You Can

Droppings are the clearest record of where the activity runs, and that record is what decides where a treatment goes. If a survey or a treatment is booked, leave them. Clear only what hygiene genuinely requires in the meantime — a food preparation surface, obviously; the back of a loft, no.

The Method

1. Ventilate the space first, and give it a few minutes.
2. Wear disposable gloves, and cover any cuts or grazes on your hands and arms beforehand.
3. Damp it down. Spray the area with a household disinfectant solution and let it sit. This is the important step and it is the one people skip.
4. Wipe or pick up, using disposable cloths or paper towel.
5. Double-bag the waste and put it straight in the outside bin.
6. Disinfect the surface properly afterwards.
7. Wash your hands thoroughly, and put the gloves in the bin rather than reusing them.

Why the Caution

Rats carry organisms that can cause illness in people, of which leptospirosis — Weil's disease in its severe form — is the one usually named. Infection is uncommon but it is a real risk, and it is spread through contact with rat urine, particularly via broken skin or contaminated water.

The precautions above are ordinary and proportionate: gloves, cover cuts, do not aerosolise it, wash your hands, and do not eat anything they may have reached. That is the whole of it, and we are not going to dress it up beyond that.

Things Worth Throwing Away

• Any food in gnawed or opened packaging, including tins with damaged labels you cannot identify
• Dry goods stored in bags rather than sealed containers, in an affected cupboard
• Pet food from an opened bag that has been reached
• Cardboard and paper storage in an affected area, which absorbs and holds contamination
• Insulation that has been nested in, once the roof space is clear

And Then the Actual Problem

Cleaning up is housekeeping, not control. It removes the evidence and the contamination; it does nothing about the animals or the gap they came through. Deal with the activity first where you can, then clean, then proof — in that order.
