Rat Droppings or Mouse Droppings? How to Tell the Difference in Saint Ives

Most of the time, telling rat from mouse decides which treatment you buy. Telling rodent from bat decides whether any work should happen in that roof space at all.
Why the Confusion Happens
Bat droppings and mouse droppings are similar in size and both are dark. Both turn up in lofts. Somebody finds a scatter of small dark deposits in a roof space, reasonably assumes mice, and buys a product — or blocks the gap they think is the way in.

The gnawing is the giveaway. A rodent gnaws — it has to, to keep its teeth in shape. Bats do not gnaw anything, do not nest, and do nothing to the fabric of the building. A loft with droppings but no gnawing whatever and no nesting material is a loft worth thinking hard about before anybody treats or blocks anything.
If You Think It Might Be Bats
- Stop. Do not treat, do not block, do not clear.
- Do not disturb the area, including going in and out repeatedly with a torch.
- Take advice before any work is planned in that roof space, including building work.
- Photograph from a distance if you can do so without disturbance.
All bat species are legally protected. We will tell you when that is what we think we are looking at, and no control work happens — and we would rather lose the booking than get that wrong. It is not caution for its own sake: interfering with a roost is a considerably more serious matter than a wasted visit.
And If It Is Rodents After All
Then the ordinary identification applies. Rat droppings are roughly 12 to 18mm and tapered, grouped along a route. Mouse droppings are 3 to 6mm, pointed at both ends and scattered widely, and they come with gnawing, nesting material and frequently a strong musky smell where there are numbers of them.
Where you cannot tell, a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and identifies what is present before anything is treated. On a roof space with any doubt in it, that is the sensible order.
