How Are Grey Squirrels Removed From Loft Spaces in March?

This is the consideration that most affects a squirrel job, and it is the one people are least likely to have thought about when they ring.
The Timing
BPCA's guidance is that grey squirrels usually have two litters a year, in early spring and summer.
A female looking for somewhere dry, warm and safe to have young is exactly the animal that ends up in a roof space. So a roof space occupied during those periods may well contain a drey with young in it, and establishing that is part of the survey rather than a refinement of it.
What Goes Wrong If Nobody Checks
- Sealing the entry shuts dependent young into the roof space with no adult. That is inhumane, and it produces an odour problem in a void nobody can reach for weeks
- An excluded adult will work hard to get back to young, and is capable of making a new opening in the process — so you get fresh damage as well
- Removing the adult alone leaves the same problem
- A one-way exclusion device fitted in spring is precisely the wrong tool, for exactly this reason
This is the single most common way a squirrel job goes wrong, and it usually goes wrong because somebody — a homeowner, a roofer, a handyman — found the hole and did the obvious thing with it. Finding the opening is right. Closing it as the first step is not, and in spring or summer it is worse than doing nothing at all.
How the Job Is Done Instead
- Survey the roof space and establish whether a drey is present and whether there are young.
- Deal with the animals present, by a method appropriate to what was found.
- Confirm the roof space is clear.
- Then proof the openings, and not before.
The order does not change with the season. What changes is how carefully step one has to be done, and what happens if it is skipped.
What This Is Not an Argument For
Waiting. A squirrel in a roof space is doing damage continuously — BPCA list gnawing on woodwork and ceilings, stripping insulation from electrical wires and tearing up fibreglass insulation — and none of that pauses for the season. Leaving it until autumn means several more months of it, including the cable damage you cannot see.
It is an argument for having it done properly rather than quickly, by somebody who will look before they seal.
If You Have Already Sealed It
Tell us, and tell us when. If it was recent and it is spring or summer, that changes what we are looking for and how urgent it is. It is not a conversation anybody enjoys having, and it is a great deal better had now than in a fortnight when there is a smell.

Could there be baby squirrels in my loft?
