Squirrel Trapping — Buckden

Is That Noise in the Loft a Grey Squirrel? A Buckden Identification Guide

One question separates squirrels from almost everything else that gets into a roof, and it has nothing to do with what the noise sounds like.

We ask it on every call about a loft noise, and it usually narrows the answer before anything else has been discussed: what time do you hear it?

Squirrels Are Diurnal

That is the whole of it. A grey squirrel is active during daylight and quiet at night. Rats and mice are the opposite — largely nocturnal, starting an hour or two after a house goes quiet and continuing through the night.

So a loft that is noisy at nine in the morning and silent at two in the morning is very unlikely to have rodents in it, and no rodent treatment will change what is happening.

The Timetable

When you hear itMost likely
Early morning, then again in the late afternoon; quiet at nightGrey squirrel
After dark, through the night, quiet by dayRats or mice
First light, with the dawn chorus, then tailing offNesting birds
Briefly at dusk and again before dawnPossibly bats
Only when the heating changes statePipework and timber, not an animal
Only in windA loose tile, vent, aerial or branch
Squirrels have two peaks. Activity is usually heaviest shortly after first light and again in the couple of hours before dusk, with a quieter middle to the day. People frequently describe being woken early and then hearing it again while making dinner — that twice-daily pattern is close to diagnostic on its own.

How to Log It Usefully

  1. Note every instance with the time, over at least four or five days. One day is not a pattern.
  2. Note whether it is dark or light at the time, which matters more than the clock as the seasons change.
  3. Note the type: heavy movement, thumping, rolling, scratching, gnawing.
  4. Note how long each episode lasts.
  5. Note whether anything changes it — knocking on the ceiling, the heating, the weather.

Four or five days of that is genuinely more useful to a technician than any description of the sound, and it frequently answers the question by itself.

The Second Question: How Heavy?

If the timing says daylight, the weight usually confirms it. A squirrel sounds like an animal you could pick up — thumps, rolling sounds, confident movement, occasionally something being dragged. Rodent noise is lighter and faster, and mice in particular sound like scratching rather than movement.

Then Look for the Confirmation

Squirrel evidence is mostly visible from outside: damage at the roofline, a gnawed soffit or barge board, a hole at the eaves, and animals seen using a branch, a fence or a drainpipe to reach the roof. Inside, torn-up insulation and gnawing on timber and cable.

Where you cannot settle it, a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and identifies what is present before anything is treated — which matters in a roof space, because one of the possibilities is legally protected.

Common Questions

How do I know if the noise in my loft is a squirrel?
Time of day does most of the work. Squirrels are active in daylight and quiet at night; rats and mice are the other way round. Squirrels also sound noticeably heavier.
When are squirrels most active?
Usually shortly after first light and again in the couple of hours before dusk, with a quieter middle to the day. That twice-daily pattern is close to diagnostic.
What if I hear it at night as well?
Then it may not be a squirrel, or you may have more than one thing in the roof. Keep a log of times over several days before concluding anything.
How long should I keep a log?
Four or five days. It is more useful to a technician than any description of the sound.
