Bare patches in a Huntingdon carpet might be carpet moth or carpet beetle damage, and the two leave different clues that you can check yourself in a few minutes.
They could be, but there are two likely culprits, not one: carpet moth larvae and carpet beetle larvae. Both eat the same animal fibres in the same places. The signs they leave are different, and knowing which you have helps you work out how it got in.
| Clue | Carpet moth | Carpet beetle |
|---|---|---|
| Webbing | Silky strands in the pile | None |
| Damage | Grazed, uneven patches | Small, clean holes |
| Larva | Pale, often in a silk case | Short, brown and bristly |
| Adult | Small, drab, stays low | Small, rounded, mottled, often at windows |
| Usual route in | Already present or carried in on textiles | Often flies in from outside |
Webbing points to moth. Clean holes with none points to beetle. Either way, the damage is done by the larvae and not by the adults you may see.
Huntingdon has everything from Georgian town houses to post-war estates, and neither is safe or at risk by default. An older house may have more places for lint and dust to gather. A newer one may have a wool-mix carpet over a felt underlay. What decides it is whether there is animal fibre for the larvae and whether they can feed undisturbed.
These cause tidy, regular marks in busy or bright places and leave no webbing, cases or bristly skins behind.
Vacuuming is useful but does not reach larvae well down in the pile. If new damage appears, that is a sign it is still going on.
You do not have to identify the pest first. A pest inspection and survey is £120, and carpet moth control in Huntingdon covers both moth and beetle at £220 for the first room and £60 for each further room. There is no call-out fee and the figure is confirmed before work. The cost guide has the details.
If the problem returns within 14 days, we re-treat free of charge. We cannot restore the carpet, so any lost pile will need patching or replacing.
Whether your house in Huntingdon is a Georgian town house or a 1960s semi, the sign-reading is the same.
Huntingdon homes near the river can have both open windows and older floors, so keep both possibilities in mind.
