Whether a Huntingdon home is Georgian or post-war, the floor beneath its heavy furniture is the likeliest place for carpet moth larvae to feed unnoticed.
Carpet moths show up under furniture because the larvae avoid light and movement. They feed on keratin, so the wool in a carpet, rug or underlay is food, and the hidden floor is the safest place to eat it.
Huntingdon has tall Georgian townhouses with large rooms and rugs, and a great deal of post-war housing with fitted carpets from wall to wall. The layouts differ, but the habit does not. In the Georgian house the problem tends to be under rugs and wide heavy pieces. In the post-war semi, it is the fitted carpet at the edges under the bed and the settee.
Pheromone traps and hanging strips catch some adult moths. They do not deal with larvae, and larvae do the damage. Insecticide sprays from a shop generally cannot get down into pile and underlay, and may leave marks. People often conclude from fewer flying moths that the problem is solved, then find new bare patches a month later.
Vacuum thoroughly and repeatedly around the edges and under furniture, and wash wool that can be washed. Do not forget lofts and window recesses, where dead insects collect and provide food.
If the damage continues, the next step is treatment of the feeding areas. In Huntingdon the price is £220 for the first room and £60 for each other room, fixed and confirmed before booking, with no call-out fee. Details are on the Huntingdon service page, and the cost guide explains the numbers. If the problem returns within 14 days we come back free.
Huntingdon houses of both periods often have floors that have been covered and recovered several times. Old underlay left in place, and carpet laid over carpet, give larvae a thick, undisturbed layer. If a room has been re-carpeted and the problem still returned, ask whether the old underlay was lifted. It is a question we ask when we survey.
If you would rather talk it through, call 01223 902388 or send us a WhatsApp message with a photo of the edge of the carpet. We will tell you honestly whether it looks like moth, beetle or something else.
Tell us what you have found and where. We confirm the treatment and the price before anything is booked.
