Found something small and pale in a Huntingdon carpet? Here is how to tell a carpet moth larva from fluff and from other creatures, and what the damage confirms.
A carpet moth larva is a pale, soft, grub-like creature with a darker head, often inside a small silk case made of carpet fibre. If what you have found is hard, winged, hairy or several centimetres long, it is almost certainly something else. The surrounding damage will help you decide.
If it is the second or third, you are likely dealing with carpet beetle, which leaves clean holes and no webbing. Treatment is the same and the price is the same.
One larva does not prove much. Look for the pattern around it: grazed or thin patches, silk threads in the pile, fine gritty debris and damage in sheltered places such as under a sofa. In Huntingdon that might be a Georgian house with a wool runner on the stairs, or a post-war semi with a fitted bedroom carpet. The pattern is what counts, not the age of the property.
Eggs are tiny, whitish and effectively invisible without magnification. Do not expect to find them. Treat any live larvae or fresh webbing as a sign that eggs are in the pile as well.
The adult clothes or carpet moth is small, drab and a weak flier that prefers dark, low places. Adult carpet beetles are small, rounded and mottled, and are often found on windowsills. Neither adult is what eats your carpet.
Put the specimen in a clear container or tape it to card, take a close photograph and send it to us. If you would like the extent checked, a pest inspection and survey costs £120 fixed. Once the problem is confirmed, carpet moth and carpet beetle control in Huntingdon is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, with the price confirmed before booking. The cost guide explains the details.
Larvae have to come from somewhere. A second-hand rug, a bag of old woollens, a secondhand armchair or a beetle through an open window are all possible routes in. Thinking back to when you last brought something wool into the house can help us find the origin, and stop the problem returning after treatment.
