Carpet Moth & Carpet Beetle Control — Ely

How Can You Remove Carpet Moth Larvae From a Home in Ely?

To remove carpet moth larvae from an Ely home, first find what they are feeding on, then clean those places thoroughly and treat the floor if they keep coming back.

Most Ely households clean the carpet and stop there. The better order is to find what the larvae are living on, because cleaning a floor that is being restocked from somewhere else only buys you a few weeks.

Step one: find the food

Larvae eat keratin, which means wool, silk, fur, feathers and leather, and also dried insects. The last one surprises people. Dead insects collected in a loft, a window recess, an unused room or an old nest can feed a population that then moves down to the carpet.

Many Ely homes are Victorian or older terraces with lofts, chimney breasts and boxed-in alcoves. These are all places where dust and dead insects build up unseen. If you have damage in the carpet, take a torch and look at:

  • The loft and any bird or wasp nest remains in or near it
  • Window recesses and the sills of sash windows
  • The corners of rooms that are not used
  • Cupboards holding old wool blankets, rugs or a fur-trimmed coat
  • Under and behind radiators and large furniture

Step two: clear and clean

  1. Remove what you find, and bag dead insects and nest material for the outside bin.
  2. Vacuum the area, then the carpet edges and the ground under furniture.
  3. Empty the cleaner into a sealed bag straight away.
  4. Wash wool items hot where they allow it, or put them in a freezer.
  5. Store clean wool sealed, not loose.
What cleaning cannot promise. If larvae are already in the underlay or under the gripper rod, removing the food elsewhere will not shift them. They need to be dealt with where they are.

Working in an older terrace

Ely terraces often have a long run of carpet from front door to back, with boxed-in stairs and cupboards under them. These make it easy for a problem to travel unnoticed. When you clean, work from the room with the damage towards the rest of the house, so you do not push larvae ahead of you.

If you live close to the cathedral or the river, older buildings may also have deep window recesses and shutters that gather debris. Include these in your torch check, and clear them out before you vacuum the floor.

Step three: decide whether to treat

Watch for new patches over three to four weeks. If you see them, the infestation is established beyond the reach of a vacuum. Our Ely carpet moth control concentrates on the edges, under furniture and the other harbourage points, and on storage areas where clothing is involved. Follow-up is included where appropriate because eggs and protected larvae can survive a first treatment.

The price is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, confirmed before we book, with no call-out fee. If you are not sure the cause is carpet moth at all, a pest inspection and survey is £120 fixed. More on costs is in our carpet moth cost guide.

Common Questions

Can dead insects in my loft really cause carpet damage?
They can sustain a population of larvae, which may then find wool carpet elsewhere in the house. It is worth clearing them as part of the clean.
Should I tackle the loft before the carpet?
Look at both together. Cleaning the carpet while the food source remains means larvae can keep returning.
Is it a carpet moth or a carpet beetle?
Webbing and silk cases suggest a moth. Clean holes with no webbing and bristly brown larvae suggest a beetle. The treatment and price are the same.
Does treatment mean leaving the house?
No. We tell you how long to keep off treated areas and what to do afterwards.
