In an older Ely house, worn patches and moth damage can look alike, but the tell-tale signs are webbing, small cases and where on the floor the pile has gone.
The quickest way to separate carpet moth damage from ordinary wear is location. Wear happens where people walk: doorways, the stairs, the path to the sofa. Moth damage happens where nobody does, so bare patches under furniture, along skirtings and at the edge of a rug point to larvae rather than feet.
Ely has many Victorian and older terraces with rugs laid over floorboards, and that is a very common setting for moth. Underneath a rug is warm, dark and rarely disturbed. Lift a corner and look at both sides.
A carpet moth larva is pale and grub-like with a darker head. Some build a small silken tube from carpet fibre, about the size of a grain of rice, and drag it as they move. A beetle larva is brown, short and bristly, and it leaves shed skins behind as it grows.
You will not usually see them. They are tiny, whitish and tucked into the pile or the folds of stored textiles. The practical rule is that if there are larvae or webbing, there are eggs, and removing only what you can see leaves the next generation behind.
An Ely loft, understairs cupboard or blanket chest can be the origin. Wool blankets, fur, feather cushions, leather and old dried insects all count as food. If you find holes in stored items, check the nearest carpet as well.
If you are unsure whether it is moth, beetle or simply wear, a pest inspection and survey at £120 fixed identifies the pest and the extent. If you already know, carpet moth and carpet beetle control in Ely is £220 for the first room and £60 for each extra room, with no call-out fee and the price confirmed first. Our cost guide sets out what a visit involves.
Run your fingers along the edge of the room where carpet meets skirting, then under the nearest sofa. If the pile feels thin, gritty or tangled with fine threads there, but not in the middle of the room, larvae are the likely cause. Photograph it before you vacuum, so you have a record.
