In Ely's older terraces, rugs over boards and furniture pushed against gappy skirting give carpet moth larvae an ideal place to feed unseen.
Carpet moths appear under furniture because their larvae need somewhere dark, undisturbed and stocked with food, and the floor beneath heavy furniture offers all three. They are not attracted to the furniture itself.
It is worth thinking of that strip of floor as a small larder. It holds carpet or rug fibre, and often wool underlay. It holds hair, lint and skin flakes. In many Ely terraced houses it also holds the draught that comes up between boards and skirting, along with whatever dust and dead insects travel with it. The Natural History Museum lists dried insects among the foods of these larvae, so an old window recess or a long-unused cupboard counts.
Vacuum thoroughly, wash what can be washed, and freeze small woollens if suitable. These cut the numbers and are the right first step. But a terrace with long runs of skirting and a house full of wool is hard to clear alone, and any larvae left behind rebuild the problem. Shop sprays cannot be relied upon, and some can mark fabrics.
We identify the pest and the extent, treat the feeding areas, and give you the fixed price before booking. For Ely, see our carpet moth service page. It costs £220 for the first room and £60 for each further room, and our cost guide explains why. A repeat within 14 days is re-treated free.
It is easy to assume a house on the edge of the Fens must have a damp or river problem, but carpet moths are not a moisture pest. In an Ely terrace the more likely cause is wool in a quiet place. A back bedroom that has been used for storage is a typical example, with boxes of blankets on carpet and a wardrobe pushed tight to the wall.
For anyone in Ely who has found a patch and is wondering how urgent it is: larvae feed slowly, so there is no need to panic, but damage does not stop by itself. A few weeks of waiting usually means a larger patch and more rooms to deal with.
