Two or three simple tests, the white sock walk, the damp paper flea dirt check and a pet comb, will tell most Saint Ives households within an evening whether fleas are really the problem.
You do not need a professional to start answering the question. Three tests, none of which needs special equipment, will show whether fleas are present. They also show what they are not, which is just as useful.
Put on a pair of long white socks, pulled up over your trousers or ankles. Shuffle slowly across the carpet, rugs and the floor beside the sofa and beds, taking a few minutes in each room. Fleas react to the warmth and vibration of footsteps and will jump onto the fabric, where the dark specks show up well against the white. A clean result is a good sign but not proof, since fleas may be dormant in cocoons.
Gather any small black grit you find in pet bedding or on the pet's coat, and place it on a sheet of damp white kitchen paper. If it dissolves into a reddish-brown smear, it is flea dirt, which is digested blood. Ordinary dirt just stays as dirt.
Run a fine-toothed flea comb through the coat over a white sheet, concentrating on the base of the tail, the neck and the belly. Fleas, or flea dirt, on the paper confirm it. If the pet is itching and the comb shows nothing, a vet can advise.
Saint Ives has a compact older centre close to the river and many homes where dogs walk the riverside paths and towpaths daily. A dog that picks up fleas outdoors can bring them back to the carpet. Check where it sleeps, in the hall and by the back door, and not just on the bed.
The tests work the same way in a Saint Ives terrace, a riverside flat or a flat above a shop, and they cost nothing but an evening.
Treating the whole affected area is what ends it, since most of an infestation is in the carpet and bedding as eggs, larvae and pupae. Our flea control service is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, as the flea treatment cost guide explains. If you remain unsure, a pest inspection and survey at £120 fixed cost tells you what you have before spending anything on treatment.
Please do not vacuum or shampoo the carpet immediately before the sock walk, because that removes the very evidence you are looking for. Equally, avoid spraying shop-bought products around the room first. They can mask the result, and if you later book a treatment the technician will want to know what was used and where.
Treatment is guaranteed for 14 days. For help reading your results in Saint Ives, call 01223 902388 or message us on WhatsApp.
