If you are still being bitten in Ely after the pet has been treated, the cause is almost certainly pupae waiting in the carpet rather than fleas on the animal.
Treating a pet kills fleas on the pet. It does nothing to the cocoons sitting in the carpet, and those are what bite you after the animal has been sorted. The cocoon is the bit people do not know about, and it explains most of the cases we hear about.
This catches out plenty of people in Ely, particularly where a house has been shut up over a holiday or a long weekend away. The pet is fine, the owner is fine, and then a day or two after coming home the ankles are covered in bites. Nothing has failed. The house simply had a spell with nobody in it to trigger the cocoons.
A flea egg falls off the animal, hatches into a larva that burrows into the carpet and feeds on debris, then spins a cocoon. The cocoon is sticky, collects dust that camouflages it, and resists insecticide. The adult inside can wait there until it senses a host: vibration, warmth or the carbon dioxide of someone breathing nearby.
A week away, a few days at a relative's, or a flat above a shop that has stood empty: without footfall, nothing emerges and the pupae accumulate. On the first day back, the lot get the signal together. People in Ely, with terraces and older houses that are sometimes left for a spell, describe it as fleas appearing from nowhere. They were there the whole time.
Usually yes. A pet that has stopped scratching and shows no fresh flea dirt (specks that smear rusty red on damp paper) is probably protected. Your vet can check the dose and timing. It is the house that is behind, not the animal.
Our flea control in Ely is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, fixed and agreed before we start. Our flea treatment cost guide has the detail, and the inspection and survey is there if you are unsure about the cause.
Afterwards, keep using the rooms, but do not vacuum or wash the carpets for at least two weeks. You may see some fleas for a few days as the remainder emerge; that is the treatment doing its work. If they persist within 14 days, we return and re-treat free.
