In a modern Cambourne house, persistent flies usually come from somewhere that is rarely used, such as a spare shower or a bin store, and professionals treat that source rather than the room.
Persistent flies in a home are dealt with by identifying the fly, tracing the one place it is breeding and treating that place properly. In a newer house in Cambourne that place is rarely a dirty one. It is more often a drain or trap that nobody uses enough.
Many Cambourne houses and flats have several bathrooms, utility rooms and en-suites, with waste pipes that run for months with very little water going through them. A low-use pipe is a quiet one. The organic film that builds up on the inside wall of the pipe is left undisturbed, and small drain flies use it as a complete breeding site.
You will usually see them resting on the wall near a basin, bath or shower. They are small, dark and furry, and they sit still instead of flying round the room. If you see them, the room is not dirty. The pipe behind it is the problem.
The first job is working out which drain. We ask where the flies are seen and when, and then check the likely candidates in turn.
Once the drain is found, the film inside the pipe is removed physically and with a biological drain product that digests organic matter. Adult flies in the room are treated at the same time. Done properly this is a permanent fix, because without the film there is nowhere for the next generation to develop.
Bleach is the usual first attempt, and it runs down the middle of the pipe past the film on the wall. It smells effective and does very little.
Fly control in Cambourne is a fixed £180, agreed before we start, and the cost guide sets out what it covers. If you are unsure what the fly is, our inspection and survey is £120. You can also read about the Cambourne fly control service.
People in Cambourne often assume a few flies means a minor issue and a swarm means a major one. In reality a handful of drain flies can mean a well-established film, while a swarm can come from one bin. Numbers tell us less than behaviour does.
