Newer houses get flies like any other, and the culprit is usually one of four small species, each of which points to a different place to look.
A modern house in Cambourne is no protection from flies, and the type you have usually shows itself by which room it favours. Work out the room and the size of the fly and you have a good idea of the source before anyone picks up a spray.
Tiny flies hovering over the fruit bowl, the bin or the recycling are fruit flies. They are attracted to fermenting residue, and one spilt drink behind a dishwasher or under a unit is enough to sustain them. Bigger, greyish flies that land on food and walk across worktops are house flies, and they are usually coming from waste, either yours or from outside.
Small dark flies resting on tiles and walls, barely moving unless disturbed, are drain flies. They breed in the organic film that builds up inside waste pipes, particularly in a shower trap or basin that is not used often. In a house with a spare bathroom or an en-suite that sits quiet for weeks, that film is left undisturbed.
Large flies at an upstairs window need a different explanation. In a newer property, cluster flies can still gather in a roof space and emerge on warm days, though they are not breeding indoors. A sudden burst of big buzzing flies is another matter, because it can mean something has died somewhere in the building.
Cleaning will deal with fruit flies fairly reliably. It will not shift drain flies, because the breeding film is inside the pipe, and it will not remove anything that has died in a void.
The estates in Cambourne are mostly recent, with modern plumbing, sealed windows and few hidden cavities. That tends to make the source easier to find, since there are fewer places for it to hide. It also means a dry-trap, a rarely used en-suite or an overlooked bin store is more likely in a Cambourne home to be the culprit than something dead in a wall.
Homes in Cambourne close to the lakes or open green space may see more flies drifting in through open doors in summer, though that is simply flies passing through rather than breeding indoors. Screens and a closed bin lid deal with most of it.
If you have tried the obvious and the flies are still there a week later, the source is probably not where you have been looking. Our fly control in Cambourne is a fixed £180 with no call-out fee, and the price is agreed before work starts. Not sure what you have? A pest inspection and survey is £120. See the cost guide for the detail.
