Fly Control — Duxford

Which Type of Fly Is Infesting My Duxford Home or Business?

The time of year you see flies is as useful a clue as their size, and in an older house it can separate a loft problem from a kitchen one.

If you are trying to work out which fly is in your Duxford home, think about the month before you think about the species. Some flies appear in spring and summer and are tied to bins and food. Others turn up in autumn and winter, and those are a different problem entirely.

Autumn and Winter: Large, Slow Flies

Large, dark and sluggish flies on upstairs windowsills, often in numbers, are very likely cluster flies. They gather in roof spaces in autumn to overwinter and become active again on mild days. In an older Duxford cottage with a lived-in loft, cracks around the eaves and a roof that has settled over the years, they have plenty of ways in.

The point that catches people out is that cluster flies are not breeding in your house. Their larvae develop outside, so there is no hygiene fault to fix and no source in the kitchen.

The giveaway. Slow, groggy flies that crawl up the glass and sit there, with a faint smell if crushed, in a room upstairs, in cooler months. Quick, noisy flies are a different animal.

Spring and Summer: The Ones Tied to Food and Waste

  • House flies: medium, grey, quick, around bins, food and anything left out
  • Fruit flies: tiny, hovering, drawn to ripe fruit and drinks
  • Drain flies: small, furry and dark, resting on bathroom and kitchen walls

Any Month: Blow Flies

Large, loud, metallic blue or green flies can appear whenever it is warm enough. If a lot of them show up quickly at a window, check the loft and any enclosed space, because they lay eggs on dead animals and it takes only a small carcass to produce a crowd.

Mixed Housing, Mixed Causes

Duxford has old cottages alongside newer houses, and the two behave differently. In an older cottage, an uninsulated or open roof space is where cluster flies tend to collect. In a newer Duxford house, the same flies are less likely to be an issue and the kitchen, bins and drains are better suspects.

If you are not sure which category your house falls into, look at when the flies appeared. Autumn and mild winter days point upwards, to the roof. Summer points down, to waste and drains.

What You Can and Cannot Do

You can vacuum cluster flies up and seal obvious gaps, and you can empty bins, wash recycling and clean a suspect drain. You cannot deal with a roof space full of overwintering flies by spraying the room below, and a sprayed window does nothing about what is above the ceiling.

Our fly control in Duxford is £180 fixed, with no call-out fee, agreed before we start. Our cost guide explains what is included. If you would like the species and source confirmed first, a pest inspection and survey is £120.

Call 01223 902388 or send a WhatsApp message saying when the flies started and where, and we will take it from there.

Common Questions

Why are there large flies at my bedroom window in October?
That is typical of cluster flies, which move into roof spaces in autumn and drift down into rooms below.
Do cluster flies mean my house is dirty?
No. They are not breeding indoors, so cleaning makes no difference to them.
Can I just use a spray on the window?
It kills the flies that reach the glass, but it does not touch the ones still in the roof space.
How do I tell a blow fly from a house fly?
Blow flies are larger and metallic blue or green. House flies are duller, grey and smaller.
