Where the flies sit and what they look like says more than how many there are, so a quick look at your Duxford windows can narrow down the cause.
Flies end up at windows because light pulls them there. That part is the same for every fly. What differs is why they are in the house in the first place, and you can work that out in a couple of minutes by looking at them closely.
| What you see | Likely fly | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Large, slow, upstairs, mostly cooler months | Cluster flies | Roof space and wall tops |
| Large, loud, metallic, a sudden burst | Blow flies | Anything dead in a void, loft or chimney |
| Small, dark, furry, on walls by water | Drain flies | Waste pipes and traps |
| Tiny, around fruit and bins | Fruit flies | Spillages and rubbish |
Most window problems fall into the first two rows, because those are the flies that make for the glass in numbers.
An older Duxford cottage often has gaps, a chimney, a deep roof void and sometimes an outbuilding attached. These give overwintering flies somewhere to sit and give larger flies a way in. A newer house on the edge of the village has fewer routes, so a persistent group of flies there is more likely to come from a drain or a bin.
What you cannot easily do yourself is treat a roof void properly or trace a hidden carcass in a cavity. An aerosol on the glass is a tidy-up, not a treatment.
Flies often go back to the same pane. That is mostly because it is the brightest, but it can also be the one nearest to the opening they used. If one window in your Duxford house collects most of the flies, look directly above and beside it. A loft hatch, an airing cupboard, an old vent or the join between an extension and the main house can all be the route, and the flies you see are the ones that have found their way down.
Photograph what is on the sill and keep a note of the date. It makes any later conversation much quicker.
We start by identifying the fly and the source. Our fly control in Duxford service is £180 fixed cost, confirmed first, and our fly control cost guide shows exactly what you get for it. Not sure whether it is a fly problem or something else? A pest inspection and survey costs £120.
A Duxford cottage and a modern Duxford semi can show identical flies for completely different reasons, which is why we look before we treat.
