In a March terrace or estate house the flies at the kitchen window usually come from the kitchen itself, so bins, recycling and drains are the first places to look.
Flies go to windows because of light, and the kitchen window is often the brightest place in a house. If flies are gathering there, rather than upstairs, the odds shift towards the things kitchens produce: waste, food residue and damp drains.
In a row of older March terraces the roof void can run along several houses. That is useful to know because flies resting there can turn up in your upstairs windows even though your own house is spotless. Larger, slower flies at upstairs windows in the colder months point that way. Estate homes built more recently tend to have separated lofts, so the kitchen is a better first suspect.
Done properly, those steps often end a fruit fly or house fly problem within a few days. They will not help if the real source is in the roof or in a wall cavity.
Fruit flies are tiny and can enter through the smallest gaps or come in on shopping and produce. A single overripe banana or an open bottle of wine can support a surprising number. It means a kitchen window full of fruit flies is rarely a sign of dirt, just of something sweet and damp that has been left a day or two too long. That is good news, since the fix is usually quick: remove the source, wash the area and the numbers fall in days.
We find the source and treat it. fly control in March costs £180 fixed cost, confirmed before the work begins, and the fly control cost guide describes the process in full.
Many March kitchens face the back garden, where bins and recycling boxes tend to sit close to the door, so the window and the flies' source are often only a few metres apart.
