Are These Mouse Droppings? Mouse Identification Advice for Great Shelford

This is the sign people find without recognising it — a handful of shredded material in the back of a cupboard gets swept up as debris, when it is the most informative thing in the property.

What a Mouse Nest Looks Like

Not a bird's nest and not a neat structure. A rough ball or pad of shredded material, usually 8 to 15cm across, tucked into a corner, a void or the back of something that does not get moved.

• Shredded paper and cardboard — the commonest material in a house
• Loft insulation, torn into fine strands
• Fabric, from stored clothing, upholstery, a mattress or a car seat
• Plastic bag and packaging film, shredded
• Dried plant material in a shed or garage
• Anything soft that was within reach, which is genuinely the whole list

Where They Are

• The back of a low kitchen cupboard, particularly under the sink
• Behind or underneath an appliance — warmth is the draw
• Inside the void behind a kickboard
• Loft insulation, often against a joist or in a corner
• Inside stored boxes, a drawer nobody opens, a suitcase
• Inside upholstered furniture in storage
• In a garage, in stored fabric, cardboard or a vehicle
• Airing cupboards and boiler cupboards, which are warm and quiet

Reading What Is Around It

• Droppings concentrated nearby, heavier than elsewhere
• A strong musky smell, which is most noticeable at the nest
• Gnawed material in the immediate area, and the source it came from
• A route leading away from it — faint smearing along an edge
• A gap within a metre or two. BPCA put a mouse at 5mm, roughly the diameter of the eraser end of a pencil, so look for something smaller than seems plausible

What to Do With It

Leave it, photograph it, and note where it is. It is one of the more useful things you can show a technician, and removing it before the property is treated achieves very little — the animals simply rebuild, frequently within a day or two, and you have removed the clearest indication of where they are.

Once the property is confirmed clear, the nest and the contaminated material around it should be removed and the area disinfected. In a loft, insulation that has been nested in has stopped doing the job you paid for and is usually worth replacing in the affected area.

Handling It Safely, When the Time Comes

Gloves, damp it down with a disinfectant solution rather than pulling it apart dry, double-bag it and wash your hands properly afterwards. Do not vacuum a nest — a domestic machine holds the material and puts it back out through the exhaust.
