Why deterrents are the wrong category of solution. A mouse is not visiting your house for a reason it can be talked out of. It is living in the structure because the structure suits it — warm, safe, quiet, with food somewhere in the building. Something unpleasant in one spot moves it to another spot. It does not make the building unsuitable.
The Things That Do Work

Why Retail Bait Often Disappoints
Placement, competing food, and too little for too short a time are the usual reasons. There is also one most people have never heard of: BPCA state that almost all house mouse populations in London — and possibly other cities — are resistant to traditional rodenticides.
We want to be careful with that rather than alarming. It is a statement about London, and BPCA say possibly other cities. We have no evidence that mouse populations in Cambridgeshire are resistant and we are not going to claim it to sell a treatment. What it does mean is that a bait failing is not automatically user error, and buying more of the same is not automatically the answer.
So What Would We Actually Suggest?
Sealed food storage and proofing, in that order, because they are the two things that keep working after everybody has gone home. Then treatment for whatever is already inside. BPCA's own recommendation for any mouse infestation is to contact a professional, and that is not a difficult position for us to agree with — but we would rather you spent the money on the parts that last.
