Where the Sound Comes From
Sound travels a long way through a structure, which is why locating it is harder than it seems. A mouse in a wall cavity can be heard two rooms away, and a mouse on a ceiling joist can sound as though it is inside the light fitting.

- Wall cavities, which carry sound vertically
- Behind stud walls and boxed-in pipework

The most useful thing you can do is write down the time. Every time, for several nights. Rodents are active after dark. Squirrels are active in daylight. Birds are loudest at dawn. A pattern across several nights separates those better than any description of the sound itself, and it costs nothing but a note on your phone.
What Mice Do Not Sound Like
- Heavy thumping or rolling — that is more likely a squirrel, and squirrels are loudest in daylight
- Purposeful movement along a line under a floor — more likely a rat
- Fluttering — birds
- Regular ticking or tapping that starts and stops with the heating — pipework and timber, not an animal
- A single loud noise with nothing following it — rarely an animal
Confirming It
Noise narrows it down; physical evidence settles it. Look for droppings 3 to 6mm long and pointed at both ends, gnawed packaging with small neat holes, shredded nesting material, and a musky smell in an enclosed space. Look in the part of the building the noise comes from, and outside at the corresponding wall or roofline.
If you find nothing at all after a proper look, a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and settles it — including the perfectly good outcome that there is nothing there.
