Locating the activity properly saves a great deal of searching, and it is worth spending twenty minutes on before anybody lifts a floorboard.
Why It Is Harder Than It Sounds
A structure conducts sound. A mouse on a ceiling joist can be heard along the length of that joist and in the rooms either side. A mouse in a wall cavity can be heard upstairs and downstairs, because the cavity is continuous. And a hard surface reflects sound, so what you hear at the pillow may have arrived from the far corner of the room.
How to Narrow It Down
- Listen from more than one position. Different rooms, different sides of the same room, upstairs and downstairs. Where it is loudest is where it is, and that is not always where you first noticed it.
- Put your ear to the surface, or a glass against it. Direct contact cuts out the reflections and is much more precise than listening in the air.
- Try the floor as well as the wall. A ceiling void is reachable from both, and a noise that seems to be in a bedroom ceiling is often in the floor above it.
- Get someone else to listen elsewhere at the same time and compare notes. Two people in different rooms triangulate it quickly.
- Knock, and note where the animal goes quiet from. It will resume after a minute or two.
The distinction worth getting right: in the ceiling, or in the floor above it? They are the same void, approached from different sides, and which side you can open decides how the job is done. If you can get to the room above, lifting a board there is far less disruptive than taking down a ceiling — and a technician will want to know before they arrive.

- Whether it moves during an episode, and in which direction
- Which external wall it is nearest, because that is where to look outside
- What is on the other side — a neighbour, a garage, a bathroom, a riser
Then Connect It to the Structure
Once you know roughly where, work out what is there. A stud wall has a void. A cavity wall has a cavity connected to the roof. A ceiling void runs between joists. Boxed-in pipework is a vertical shaft. A bath panel usually opens straight into the joist void. Knowing which of those you are listening to tells you where the treatment goes and where to look for the way in.
And Look Outside at the Same Place
Whatever wall the noise is nearest, go and look at the corresponding external wall with a torch held low: pipe and cable entries, air bricks, the eaves above it, smearing at any opening. BPCA put a mouse at a gap of 5mm, roughly the diameter of the eraser end of a pencil, so it will be smaller than you are expecting.
Where you cannot locate it at all, that is common and it is part of what a survey is for. A pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost.
