This is the single most common blind spot in a mouse search. People crawl round the base of a building with a torch, find nothing, and conclude there is no way in — having looked at perhaps half of the surface a mouse can reach.
Mice Climb, and They Are Good at It
A mouse can climb a rough brick wall, a pebbledash render, a drainpipe, a trellis, a climbing plant and a fence panel. It can cross from a branch to a roof, and it can run along a fence line to reach a building it could not otherwise get to.
So a gap at eaves level is not a harder route than a gap at the doorstep — it is frequently an easier one, because it is undisturbed and nobody has ever looked at it.
Where the Roofline Openings Are
- Eaves, where the roof meets the wall head — often open by design for ventilation
- Soffit and fascia joints, particularly where two lengths meet and at a corner
- Where a soffit has been replaced and the new board does not quite meet the wall
- The verge at a gable end, where mortar has failed
- Under lifted, slipped or broken tiles
- Around a soil vent pipe where it passes the roofline
- At old vents and flue terminals, including disused ones
- Where a lower roof meets a wall — over a bay, a porch or a single-storey extension. A very common route and easy to overlook
- Around a dormer, at the cheeks and the junctions
And What Gets Them Up There
- Overhanging branches. The commonest of the lot. Anything reaching within a metre or so of the roof is a bridge.
- Climbing plants. Ivy, wisteria, climbing roses, a mature honeysuckle — all of them are ladders, and ivy is also cover once they are there.
- Trellis and wall-mounted planting.
- Fence runs that meet the building, giving a raised route straight to it.
- Drainpipes, particularly older cast iron with brackets, and any pipe boxed into a corner.
- Adjoining structures — a garage roof, a shed, a bin store, a log store, a wall.
The cheapest proofing job there is. Cutting back a branch or taking ivy off a wall costs an afternoon and removes an entire category of route. It is also the one thing on this list that does not need anybody on a ladder with a roll of mesh, which is why we mention it first every time.
Looking Without Getting on the Roof
- Binoculars from the garden, which is genuinely how a lot of this gets done
- A phone camera zoomed in, photographed and looked at afterwards
- From an upstairs window of your own or a neighbouring property
- Look for staining or smearing at a soffit joint, which shows even from a distance
- Watch at dusk if you suspect a particular point
Do not go up a ladder to check a roofline. It is not worth it, and a survey will do it properly — a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and covers inside and outside, including the roofline.
