The bat one is the important one. All bat species are legally protected. If droppings crumble to a glittery powder rather than a paste, and they are in a pile below a fixed point in a roof rather than spread along a route, stop and take advice before anything is treated, blocked or cleared. That is not a technicality — disturbing a roost is a serious matter.
So What Does a Rodent Dropping Actually Look Like?
- Rat: roughly 12–18mm, dark, tapered at the ends, sausage-shaped, often slightly curved. About the size of an olive stone
- Mouse: roughly 3–6mm, dark, pointed at both ends, fairly uniform. About the size of a grain of rice
- Both: soft and pliable when fresh, grey and crumbly when old
- Both: found in numbers rather than singly, and associated with other signs — gnawing, smears, noise, a route
How to Get an Answer Without Handling Anything
- Photograph them with something for scale. A coin, a pencil, a ruler.
- Photograph the surroundings too — where they are matters as much as what they are.
- Note whether anything else is present: gnawing, a hole, a smell, a noise, a slime trail.
- Leave them where they are until somebody has looked.
- Send us the photograph. Most of these are settled from a picture.
