• A single animal in a shed or garage, with no sign of others and no activity in the house

Where It Stops Being Sensible

• Any activity inside the living space, a loft, a floor void or a wall cavity. You cannot see what is being gnawed and cable is one of the things
• More than one or two animals, where trapping will not get ahead of the breeding — BPCA put a female at reproducing every six weeks with six to eight young in favourable conditions
• Anything suggesting a drainage defect, which is neither a trapping problem nor a proofing one
• Work at height, in a confined void, or anywhere with an electrical hazard
• A food business or any premises subject to inspection, where an undocumented attempt is worse than none
• Rodenticide, honestly. Not because you cannot buy it, but because using it well means knowing where it goes, how much, for how long and what else might reach it

If You Do Trap

1. Place on the route, along a wall or behind cover, not out in the open where a rat has no reason to be.
2. Leave them in place. Rats are neophobic and avoid new objects; moving traps daily resets that every time.
3. Use enough of them. One trap against several animals is a slow way to lose.
4. Check them daily — leaving a trap unchecked is neither humane nor effective.
5. Keep them away from children, pets and wildlife, in a box or behind a barrier.
6. Set a limit. If a fortnight of proper trapping has not resolved it, it is not going to.
