This is not the commonest cause of recurrence, but it is the one that wastes the most money before anybody notices, because every attempt is competent and every attempt fails for the same invisible reason.

How the Misidentification Happens

Somebody hears a noise, finds a dropping, or sees something move. The word “rat” gets used. Products are bought accordingly. Nobody goes back and checks the original evidence, and the assumption is carried forward through every subsequent attempt.

The Alternatives, and How They Behave Differently

1. Find droppings and measure them. Rat 12–18mm and tapered; mouse 3–6mm and pointed at both ends. Photograph with a coin for scale.
2. Look for gnawing and judge the scale of it. Coarse damage to cable, pipe and timber is a rat; small neat holes in packaging are a mouse; damage at the roofline outside is a squirrel.
3. Note the times you hear anything, over several days.
4. Look for smear marks — the greasy residue rats leave on a route. Pronounced smearing is a strong rat indicator.
5. Look outside for burrows and runs, which point at rats, and at the roofline, which points at squirrels.

And If It Is Genuinely Unclear

A pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and identifies what is actually present, the extent and the access points before you commit to a treatment. Against a problem that has already absorbed two or three attempts, that is a considerably better purchase than a fourth.
