Squirrel Trapping — Saint Ives

How Are Grey Squirrels Removed From Loft Spaces in Saint Ives?

A trapping programme in an occupied house raises reasonable questions. Here are the answers, and what we need to know from you.

This work happens in a roof space above a household, and it is fair to want to know how that is managed. It is also something we would rather discuss at the booking stage than on the doorstep.

Where the Work Actually Is

In the roof space, above the ceiling, behind a closed hatch. That is a substantial advantage over rodent work at ground level: the equipment is not in a kitchen cupboard or behind an appliance, and it is not somewhere a child or a pet has any access to.

  • Equipment is positioned in the loft, on the routes the animal uses
  • The hatch stays closed between visits
  • Nothing is placed in the living space
  • Everything is recorded and removed at the end of the job
  • You are told what has been placed and where

What We Need to Know Before We Start

  • Children in the household and their ages, and whether any can reach the loft hatch
  • Dogs, cats and any free-roaming pets
  • Whether the loft is used for storage and by whom
  • Whether anyone goes up there regularly
  • Whether there are pets or livestock in a garden or outbuilding
  • Anyone in the household who is vulnerable, or who would be distressed by the work
Do not go into the loft during the programme. This is the one instruction that matters. Not because it is dangerous to you, but because disturbance moves the animal off the routes the equipment is positioned on, and the programme then takes longer. If you need something from the loft, tell us and we will sort it out.

Non-Target Wildlife

A roof space is a comparatively contained environment, which limits what else can reach the work — but it is not the whole picture. Where a property has a lot of foraging wildlife nearby, or birds of prey, or where the household would prefer a particular approach, say so. It is a legitimate preference and it is one we will work with.

And where something protected is present in the roof space, no control work happens at all. Bats are protected outright; birds are protected while nesting. We will tell you and stop rather than proceed.

The Conversation Worth Having With Children

If a child in the household knows there is a squirrel in the roof and has been hearing it, they will ask what is happening to it. That is not our conversation to have for you, but it is worth knowing the position before it comes up: the legal requirement is that a grey squirrel caught alive is humanely dispatched, and it cannot lawfully be released elsewhere.

Some households would rather have that conversation and some would rather the work happened while everyone was out. Either is fine, and it is worth saying which when you book.

And Afterwards

Everything is removed at the end of the job. Contaminated insulation is worth replacing before anybody uses the loft for storage again, and any gnawed cable is worth having an electrician look at before anything else.

Common Questions

Is squirrel work safe with children in the house?
The work is in the roof space behind a closed hatch, not in the living space, and everything is recorded and removed at the end. Tell us the ages of any children and whether any can reach the loft hatch.
Can I go into the loft while the work is going on?
Please do not. Disturbance moves the animal off the routes the equipment is positioned on and the programme takes longer. If you need something up there, tell us.
What if there is something protected in the roof?
No control work happens. Bats are protected outright and birds are protected while nesting, and we will tell you and stop.
What do I tell the children?
That is yours to decide, but it is worth knowing the position first: a grey squirrel caught alive must be humanely dispatched and cannot lawfully be released elsewhere. Some households prefer the work to happen while everyone is out.
