- You may seal in a protected species, which is a different order of problem entirely
And the one that is genuinely serious. All bat species are legally protected, and birds are protected while nesting. Treating, blocking or clearing a roof space with either present is not a wasted visit — it is a legal matter. If You Set a Live-Catch Trap for a Squirrel
There is a legal obligation attached that most people are unaware of. BPCA are clear that it is against the law to re-release a grey squirrel caught alive, and that anyone who catches one alive is legally obliged to humanely dispatch it. Buying a trap intending to release the animal in a wood puts you in a position you did not know you were choosing.
How to Avoid All of It
- Log the times for four or five days. Daylight points at squirrels, night at rodents. This alone resolves most of it.
- Look outside at the roofline for coarse damage.
- Look downstairs for droppings and smearing.
- Look for gnawing. Its absence entirely argues against any rodent or squirrel — and towards something protected.
- Do not block anything until you know.
- Get it surveyed where it remains unclear. A pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and it is the cheapest item in this entire article.
