The job finishes when the roof space is confirmed clear, not when it goes quiet. Those are different things and the difference matters.
This is the step people are least aware of and it is the one that makes everything after it safe to do.
A squirrel using a roof space leaves it to forage, with activity peaks shortly after first light and in the couple of hours before dusk. A quiet loft at eleven in the morning is a normal loft with a squirrel in it.
Add to that the fact that people stop listening once they stop worrying, and “it has gone quiet” becomes one of the least reliable pieces of evidence in this whole job.
Because the next step is sealing the roofline. Seal a roof space with an animal still in it and it gnaws its way out through timber, felt, plaster or a soffit — fresh damage in a new place, and a second repair on top of the first. In spring or summer, seal it with young inside and the outcome is worse and not recoverable.
So confirmation is not a formality at the end of the job. It is the thing that makes the proofing safe, and it is the reason a squirrel job cannot be compressed into one visit.
Once the space is confirmed clear, the openings are closed in metal — mesh or plate, fixed at every edge, keeping ventilation where the gap is there by design — and the route on to the roof gets dealt with. That is the half that decides whether you see us again.
If somebody offers to trap and seal on the same visit, that is worth a question. It is not how this job works.
