Finding the opening is half of it. What goes into the opening decides whether the job lasts a decade or until the spring.
A squirrel is considerably stronger than a rodent and gnaws with real force. That narrows the list of materials that hold to a short one.
| Material | Where and why |
|---|---|
| Galvanised or stainless steel mesh | The standard for an eaves gap, an open verge or an irregular opening. Keeps ventilation while excluding the animal. Fix it at every edge, not one corner |
| Metal plate or sheet | For a hole through timber or uPVC, and for a redundant opening that needs closing outright |
| Replacing the failed component | A missing dry verge unit, a broken vent grille, a rotten barge board. Usually better than patching over it |
| Proper mortar repair | For a failed verge or ridge bedding, on an older roof. This is roofing work |
| Removing the route up | Cutting back branches, taking ivy off the wall. Not a material, and frequently the most effective item on the list |
| Material | Why it fails |
|---|---|
| Expanding foam | The commonest mistake. Quick, looks finished, and gnawed through in a season |
| Silicone or acrylic sealant | A filler, not a barrier |
| Timber patching or plywood | Gnawed straight through. This is what a great many hasty repairs use |
| uPVC offcuts or plastic trim | Same problem — a squirrel gnaws uPVC readily |
| Chicken wire | Too light. It distorts and the animal works through or behind it |
| Netting or plastic mesh | Gnawed or pushed aside |
| Tape, cloth or bags | Days, at best |
Sealing a roof space with a squirrel in it means it gnaws its way out through timber, felt, plaster or a soffit, and you get a second repair on top of the first. Sealing young in is worse again.
Anything needing roof access or scaffolding, failed verge or ridge mortar, rotten boards, and any structural repair are roofing work rather than proofing. We will say so rather than charge you by the hour for something we cannot properly finish — and getting the roof itself sorted usually deals with the route permanently.
