The rolling sound is the squirrel giveaway. Nothing else that gets into a British roof space moves objects around the way a squirrel does. If it sounds as though somebody is rolling something across the ceiling, in daylight, that is close to conclusive.
The Knock Test
Knock firmly on the ceiling. Both animals will usually go quiet and resume after a minute or two, so this does not separate them — but it does separate an animal from a building, which is worth knowing before you go further.

- Log every instance with the time, and whether it was light or dark.
- Note the character: bounding, rolling, scurrying, gnawing.
- Note where: roof space, ceiling void, wall, under a floor.
- Look outside at the roofline for coarse damage, which points at squirrels.
- Look downstairs for droppings and smearing, which point at rats.
If the Answer Is Both
It happens, though it is uncommon. Daylight activity in the roof and night-time activity lower down in the building is exactly what it looks like, and the two need different treatments — a trapping programme for the squirrel and a rodent treatment for the rat, in the right order and with the proofing done once.
Where you cannot separate them, a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and identifies what is present before anything is booked.

A squirrel sounds considerably heavier — bounding, thumping and rolling objects about. A rat is lighter and moves purposefully along a line.
