Squirrel Trapping — Ely

Squirrel or Rat in the Loft? How Ely Homeowners Can Tell the Difference

The two animals use a roof space differently, and the geography of the evidence gives them away.

This is a less obvious test than droppings or noise, and it is more reliable than either — because it reflects how each animal actually behaves rather than what it leaves behind.

A Squirrel Uses the Whole Space

  • Evidence spread across the roof space rather than confined to a route
  • A nest, gathered from torn insulation, usually against a joist, in a corner, or under the eaves where the roof meets the wall plate
  • Activity near the entry point, which is at roof level and at the perimeter
  • Damage on the boarding and the rafters, up high as well as at joist level
  • Nothing at all lower down in the building. A squirrel comes in from outside at roof level and stays in the roof
  • Stored possessions disturbed, wherever they are

A Rat Uses a Route

  • Evidence along a line, following a joist, a wall plate or a pipe run
  • Concentrated near where it comes up — a service riser, a cavity, a boxed pipe, a gap at the wall head
  • Smearing along that route, which is the clearest indicator there is
  • A channel pushed through the insulation rather than a nest built from it
  • Evidence lower down in the building too, because it climbed through the structure to get there
  • Rarely any damage at the roofline outside
The perimeter question settles most of it. Where does the evidence begin? If it starts at the eaves or the verge — at the outside edge of the roof — the animal came in from outside, and that is a squirrel. If it starts where a wall, a riser or a boxed pipe comes up through the ceiling, it came from inside the building, and that is a rodent.

How to Check Without Disturbing Anything

  1. From the hatch, with a torch, look at where the concentration of droppings and disturbance is heaviest.
  2. Follow it to its edge. Does the trail lead to the perimeter of the roof, or to a point where something rises through the ceiling?
  3. Turn the torch off for a minute and look for daylight, which finds an external opening immediately.
  4. Look for a gathered nest as opposed to a channel.
  5. Come down and look outside at the corresponding part of the roofline.

Why It Changes the Job

A squirrel job is a trapping programme with return visits and roofline proofing, and it carries a legal dimension — re-releasing a live-caught grey squirrel is against the law. A rat job is a treatment on established routes with follow-up, plus proofing that is usually at ground level rather than at height.

They are different services at different prices, done by different methods, and the geography of the evidence is one of the quickest ways to know which you need.

Common Questions

Where do squirrels leave evidence in a loft?
Spread across the space, with a nest of torn insulation against a joist or under the eaves, and activity concentrated near a roof-level entry point at the perimeter.
Where do rats leave evidence in a loft?
Along a route — following a joist, a wall plate or a pipe run — concentrated near where they come up through the ceiling, with smearing along that line.
What is the quickest structural test?
Ask where the evidence begins. At the eaves or verge means it came in from outside, which is a squirrel. At a riser or boxed pipe means it came up from inside, which is a rodent.
Why does it matter which one it is?
They are different jobs. A squirrel is a trapping programme with roofline proofing and a legal dimension; a rat is a treatment on established routes with proofing usually at ground level.
