In a March terrace or newer estate house, bare carpet patches may be carpet beetle larvae from an open window as easily as moths, and the windowsill is a good place to start.
They might be moths, but in many houses the culprit is a carpet beetle that arrived through a window. Both leave bare patches. The difference is how they get in, and that changes where you look for clues.
Adult carpet beetles are small, rounded and mottled. They feed on pollen and nectar, so they go outdoors to flowers and come back in through open windows. They are often found on windowsills, trying to get back out. If you find a few dead ones in a March terrace or newer estate house, treat that as a clue rather than a coincidence.
The adults do not eat your carpet. They lay eggs, and the bristly brown larvae that hatch do the damage. Moth larvae work the same way, which is why bare patches appear well after the adults have gone.
March has many older terraces with narrow hallways, and a hall carpet takes heavy wear at the doors. Compare the bare patch with the traffic route. If it sits on the walking line, with flattened pile and no debris, it is wear. If it hides under the settee or against the wall, it is more worth worrying about.
Closing windows will not remove larvae already in the carpet, and vacuuming will not remove all of them either. Fresh damage a week on tells you they are still feeding.
We treat moth and beetle together. Carpet moth control in March is £220 for the first room and £60 for each extra room, confirmed before we start, and a pest inspection and survey is a fixed £120 if you want the pest identified first. The cost guide explains the details.
If the problem returns within 14 days, we come back and re-treat free. Treatment does not repair the carpet, so bare patches will need patching or replacing.
March has long rows of terraces with back gardens, and open back windows are a common way for adult beetles to come in.
A March house on a newer estate gets the same windowsill visitors as an older terrace.
