Many March households try to remove carpet moth larvae with sprays, strips or mothballs, but only cleaning and treatment of the feeding areas deal with the larvae themselves.
Search for how to get rid of carpet moths from a March home and you will find a long list of home remedies. Some are useful, some are a waste of a weekend. The thing to keep in mind is that the larvae cause the damage, so a method has to reach them to count.
March has older terraces near the railway and newer estates on the edges, and the same five methods get tried in both.
These attract adult moths and tell you they are about. They do not remove larvae from your carpet. Treat them as a way of seeing, not as treatment.
A can of spray across the open floor misses the places larvae live, which are the edges, under furniture and in the underlay. It is the commonest reason people say a product did not work.
This works for the clothing. A hot wash deals with eggs and larvae, and items that cannot be washed hot can go in a freezer. It does nothing for the carpet, so do it as well as the floor, not instead of it.
This is the most useful thing you can do yourself. The crevice tool along the skirting and a clean under every piece of furniture removes larvae physically. Empty the cleaner into a sealed bag and straight into the outside bin.
Sometimes right for appearance, but pointless if the larvae are still in the stored wool, a loft or the next room. New carpet laid over the same problem can be eaten in time, provided it contains wool.
The most common story is that someone sprays, sees fewer moths for a fortnight, and decides it has worked. Then new patches appear in the spare room a season later, because the larvae under the furniture were never touched. Judge success by the carpet over a couple of months, not by the number of moths on the wall of your March house.
If you rent, tell your landlord early. A short, well-documented report is easier to deal with than a carpet that has been quietly eaten for a year.
Our March carpet moth treatment focuses on the edges, areas under furniture and the places wool is stored. Eggs and protected larvae can survive a first treatment, so follow-up is part of the work where appropriate.
The price is £220 for the first room and £60 for each further room, with no call-out fee and nothing added after you have agreed it. See the price guide for examples. Any return within 14 days is re-treated free.
