If you have spotted a thin patch in a March carpet, photographing and dating it over a couple of weeks is one of the best ways to tell what is happening.
Carpet moth damage is identified by grazed patches with silk webbing, pale grub-like larvae or small cases, and an uneven pattern of loss in quiet corners. In March the homes range from older terraces near the railway to newer estates, and the signs are the same in each. What differs is how long they go unnoticed.
Damage that is growing is the strongest sign that larvae are feeding. Pick a patch you are worried about and:
Wear does not spread on its own in a room nobody uses. Larval damage does.
In an older terrace, check the back bedroom, under stairs cupboards and any room with a wool rug over floorboards. In a newer March estate house, look at the spare room carpet, the landing and under divan beds. Fitted carpets in either case may be a wool mix, and the underlay can be wool or felt, so a synthetic label does not settle it.
Cotton, linen and viscose are not keratin, and pure polypropylene, nylon and polyester carpet is safe. If you find damage on those materials alone, it is probably something else.
If your records show a patch growing, or you have found live larvae, call us. Carpet moth and carpet beetle control in March is £220 for the first room and £60 for each further room, confirmed before booking, with a free re-treat if it returns within 14 days. Our cost guide explains it fully.
Deep cleaning a carpet makes it less attractive to larvae because stains and body oils are food. It does not kill what is already feeding, and hot washing only helps for items you can safely wash. Treat cleaning as prevention and tidying, and use identification to decide whether you also need a treatment.
