The quickest way to find fleas in a March terrace or estate house is to follow the pet around it, because the carpet fleas live in is wherever the animal goes.
Fleas are most likely to be living in your carpet where your animal spends its time, and the signs are bites at ankle height, dark jumping specks and black grit in the pile. A good way to check a house in March, whether an older terrace near the railway or a newer estate property, is to follow the pet for a day.
Fleas feed on the animal, but their eggs do not stay on it. They fall off wherever it walks, scratches or sleeps. So the places an animal uses most are the places to inspect most closely:
Make a rough map of these places. It becomes the list of rooms to treat, and it helps to show a technician where to concentrate.
Kneel down at each of those spots and part the carpet fibres. You are looking for adult fleas, which are small, dark and fast, and for flea dirt, which looks like ground pepper. Test a few grains on damp white paper; a red-brown smear confirms it. Larvae are pale, thin and worm-like and avoid light, so you are less likely to see them.
Vacuuming the spots you mapped, washing the bedding hot and treating the animal with a vet-recommended product are all sensible. They reduce the numbers. What they usually cannot do is reach every cocoon, because pupae are sticky, camouflaged with debris and resistant to insecticide. This is why fleas often seem to return after a few weeks: the next batch simply hatches out.
Older properties in March often have gaps at floor edges and under skirting; newer estate houses tend to have fitted carpet with underlay throughout. Both give larvae the dark, undisturbed space they prefer. The layout matters less than how many rooms the animal can reach.
For a house in March, flea control is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, fixed and agreed up front. The cost guide explains how the rooms add up. Vacuum beforehand, empty the cleaner outside, and then leave the carpets unvacuumed for two weeks afterwards. We re-treat free if the problem returns within 14 days.
March is a Fenland town with a mix of older terraces and newer estates, and the advice is the same in both. If a house in March has more than one animal, map each one separately, since they may favour different rooms.
If you are unsure what you are dealing with, a pest inspection and survey is £120. Ring 01223 902388 or message us on WhatsApp.
