The First Hour

1. Photograph what you found, where, with a timestamp. The most useful thing anybody does, and it is free.
2. Record it in the log: date, time, location, who found it, what was done.
3. Take affected food and packaging out of use.
4. Do not clean the whole area yet beyond what food safety requires — the distribution is what tells a technician where the activity runs.
5. Call a professional rather than putting down a retail product.
6. Check the obvious routes while you wait: goods-in, the back door, the waste area, service entries, and the last few deliveries.

Why Mice Are a Delivery Problem as Well as a Building Problem

This is the part that distinguishes mice from rats commercially. Mice are small enough to travel in goods, and they arrive in pallets, cases, sacks and cardboard outers — which means a premises with an immaculate structure can still have mice, and the answer is not always in the building.

• Inspect incoming goods, particularly sacks, cases and cardboard outers
• Break down and remove cardboard promptly rather than storing it
• Keep goods-in clear and do not stack pallets against a wall
• Rotate stock so that nothing sits undisturbed for months
• Log where a problem first appeared, because a pattern pointing at one supplier is worth knowing

And the Building Side

• BPCA put a mouse at a gap of 5mm, roughly the diameter of the eraser end of a pencil. Service and cable entries are the usual route
• Voids behind and beneath fixed equipment, warm and rarely cleaned
• Delivery doors propped open during the working day
• Dry stores, especially where pallets meet a wall
• The neighbouring unit, in a terrace or a parade with shared structure — a treated unit beside untreated ones gets repopulated
