Foam has a place and it is not on its own. Pack the gap tight with wire wool first, then seal over it with foam or sealant to finish and weatherproof it. That combination works and looks tidy. Foam by itself is the single most common finding when we survey a property somebody has already tried to proof.
Doing It Properly
- Not until the property is confirmed clear. Sealing an active population inside causes a worse problem than it solves.
- Clean the opening out before you fill it — loose material, old foam, debris.
- Pack tightly. Wire wool that can be pulled out by hand can be pulled out by a mouse.
- Seal over to finish and to keep water out.
- Do the whole set, not the obvious one. Closing one of five openings achieves nothing.
- Check it again after a few months, particularly anything outdoors.
What to Leave to Somebody Else
- Anything needing a ladder or roof access. It is not worth it
- Structural repairs, roofline replacement or render work — that is building work
- Drainage defects, which are a drainage repair
- Anywhere with an electrical hazard
- Cavity closers and cavity trays on a newer property, which are a construction matter
