How Can You Get Mice Out of a House in Wisbech?

Nobody wants to spend three nights doing nothing. Here is what actually helps, and the short list of things that seem helpful and are not.

Tonight

1. Move all dry goods into sealed hard containers. Cereal, pasta, rice, flour, sugar, pet food, bird seed. Not the bags they came in — cardboard, paper and thin plastic are not barriers.
2. Clear anything left out and wash up before bed.
3. Clean under and behind the units and appliances if you can reach, because that is where the actual supply is.
4. Empty the food waste caddy and close the bins.
5. Write down what you have seen and heard, where, and at what time.
6. Photograph anything you find — droppings with a coin for scale, gnawing, a hole, nesting material.

Over the Next Few Days

• Note the times you hear anything. The pattern is more useful than any single instance
• Have a proper look under the sink, behind the kickboards, behind the appliances and in the loft
• Look outside at the base of the building for gaps — BPCA put a mouse at 5mm, roughly the diameter of the eraser end of a pencil, so it will be smaller than you expect
• Keep bedroom doors shut if that helps anybody sleep
• Clear stored cardboard from the affected area, which is both food and nesting material

What Not to Do

• Do not clear away all the droppings. Clean what hygiene requires — a food surface, a food cupboard — and leave the rest. The distribution is the only map of where the activity runs, and it decides where the treatment goes
• Do not block the hole if you find one. Sealing an active population inside causes a worse problem than it solves
• Do not put down shop-bought bait. It competes with a treatment, it is a hazard if it is loose and reachable, and a half-eaten retail product changes what can be done next
• Do not move furniture and appliances back after finding evidence behind them — leave the access
• Do not use a repellent product, which moves activity somewhere else and hides the pattern

If You Cannot Sleep for the Noise

It is a real problem and worth saying out loud. Mice are most active after dark and the noise carries through a structure, so it can sound far closer than it is. Closing the door of the affected room, and a fan or white noise, is the honest practical answer for a few nights — nothing you can buy will stop the noise itself while the animals are there.
