BPCA state it clearly. Because grey squirrels are an invasive pest species, it is against the law to re-release a grey squirrel if it has been caught alive, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019.
The consequence follows directly: any person who catches a grey squirrel alive is legally obliged to humanely dispatch it.
So the Honest Answer Is
A grey squirrel caught in the course of this work is dispatched humanely. It is not released elsewhere, because that is not lawful, and it is not relocated to a wood or a park however much anybody might prefer that.
We are not going to dress that up. If it is not something you are comfortable with, that is a legitimate position and it is much better established now than at the point somebody is standing in your loft.

Somebody who buys a live-catch trap intending to drive the animal to a wood and let it go is committing an offence, and has placed themselves under a legal obligation they did not know about. The Alternative Worth Knowing About
Proofing before there is a problem. A roofline that is sound, with no branch or ivy reaching it, does not get squirrels — and no animal is harmed at all. It is the genuinely humane option and it is the one nobody asks about, because it has to happen before anything goes wrong rather than afterwards.
If you have had a squirrel once, that is the conversation worth having at the end of the job.
