Why Rat Treatment Does Nothing to a Squirrel
A rodenticide treatment is placed on rodent runs, in quantities and formulations intended for rats, at ground level and along routes inside the structure. A squirrel is not using those routes, is not the target species, and the placements are in the wrong parts of the building entirely.
So the job is paid for, the noise continues, and the damage carries on — and the animal has spent that fortnight gnawing.
Why Squirrel Work Does Nothing to a Rat
A trapping programme in a roof space, positioned for an animal entering at roof level, will not deal with rats coming up through a cavity from ground level. The proofing that follows is at the roofline, which leaves every low-level route untouched.
And the legal point that only applies to one of them. BPCA are clear: because grey squirrels are an invasive pest species, it is against the law to re-release one if it has been caught alive, and any person who catches one alive is legally obliged to humanely dispatch it. That obligation attaches to whoever catches it — including a homeowner with a live-catch trap from a garden centre who intended to drive it to a wood.
What Is Common to Both
- The order. Deal with the animals, confirm the space is clear, then proof. Never seal first
- Cable damage matters. Both gnaw, and stripped conductor in a roof void is a fire risk either way
- Identification comes first, because a roof space can also contain something legally protected
- Proofing is the half that stops it recurring, and it is priced separately in both cases

Time of day is the strongest single test: squirrels in daylight, rats after dark. Roofline damage points at squirrels; evidence at ground level points at rats.
