Going into a loft to look is the obvious step and it is not always the sensible one — it is awkward, it is occasionally hazardous, and with a nesting animal it is disturbance you do not need to cause. The outside tells you most of it.
Look at the Roofline
- A hole or gnawed opening, usually at a soffit, a fascia joint, a barge board or the eaves. Squirrel damage is coarse and obvious, not subtle
- Pale exposed timber around an opening, which means the damage is recent
- Chewed plastic, where a uPVC soffit or fascia has been worked on
- A lifted or displaced tile, particularly near a verge or a valley
- Staining or rub marks at an entry point, from repeated use
- Insulation visible at an opening, or fallen below it
- Debris on the ground below — gnawed fragments, insulation, nut or cone shells
Then Look at How They Get Up There
- Overhanging branches within reach of the roof. The commonest route by a distance.
- Climbing plants on the wall — ivy, wisteria, a mature climbing rose.
- Fence runs that meet the building, giving a raised approach.
- Drainpipes, particularly older cast iron with brackets.
- Adjoining structures — a garage roof, a shed, a bin store, a wall.
Sit and watch for half an hour. This is the single most effective thing you can do, and almost nobody does it. Squirrels are active in daylight, with peaks shortly after first light and in the couple of hours before dusk. Half an hour with a cup of tea and a view of the roof, at one of those times, very often produces the animal going in or out — which settles both the species and the entry point at once.

- Noise only after dark, which points at rodents
Please Do Not Go Up a Ladder
Not to check a roofline, and not to look at a hole. It is not worth the risk and it will not tell you much more than binoculars will. A pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and covers the roofline properly, along with the roof space.
