Squirrel Trapping — Peterborough

Is That Noise in the Loft a Grey Squirrel? A Peterborough Identification Guide

On a large building the difficulty is not identifying the animal. It is that the roof void runs the length of the structure and the way in is nowhere near the complaint.

The identification is the same as in a house. What changes is everything about finding it, and the fact that somebody has to be able to show what was done.

Where This Comes Up

  • Schools and nurseries, where the noise is reported from one classroom
  • Care settings, where it disturbs residents
  • Offices and commercial units with a continuous roof void
  • Churches and halls, with large open roof structures
  • Managed residential blocks, where the roof void is common parts rather than anybody's flat
  • Terraces and long single roofs, where the void crosses several properties

Why the Noise Is Not the Location

In a domestic loft the entry point is usually within a few metres of the activity. In a continuous void running eighty feet or more, an animal that entered at one gable end is heard at the other, and the survey has to cover the whole roofline rather than the part above the complaint.

Which is why reports get dismissed. Somebody looks above the room where the noise was reported, finds nothing, and the complaint is written off. Meanwhile the animal is entering forty feet away at a lifted verge tile nobody has looked at. On a large building the survey is the job, and the treatment is comparatively straightforward.

What to Record Before Anybody Attends

  1. Where it was heard, by room or grid reference, and by whom.
  2. The time, every time. Daylight activity points at squirrels; night activity at rodents.
  3. Whether reports come from more than one location, which maps how far the void runs.
  4. Any external sightings — animals on the roof, on a parapet, using a tree or a downpipe.
  5. Any damage noticed at the roofline, or debris on the ground.
  6. Anything electrical behaving oddly, which matters more here than anywhere.

The Reason Not to Leave It

A domestic loft has a limited amount of cable in it. A commercial or institutional roof void carries containment, power, data and fire alarm runs across the whole building — and BPCA list stripping insulation from electrical wires among the damage grey squirrels do in roof spaces. Bare conductor in a void above an occupied building is a different order of risk from the same thing in a house.

And the Record

What was reported, what was found, what was done and what was recommended, in writing. On a managed building that document is frequently the deliverable — it is what a facilities manager, a governing body or a managing agent needs to get the roofline work approved.

A pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and covers the structure and the roofline with a written report.

Common Questions

We can hear something in the roof above one room. Where is it getting in?
Very possibly nowhere near that room. On a continuous roof void an animal entering at one end is heard at the other, so the survey has to cover the whole roofline.
Why do these reports get dismissed?
Because somebody looks directly above where the noise was reported, finds nothing, and writes it off. On a large building the survey is most of the job.
Is it more urgent in a commercial building?
The cable risk is greater. A commercial roof void carries power, data and fire alarm runs across the whole building, and squirrels strip insulation from wiring.
Do we get a written report?
Yes — what was reported, found, done and recommended. On a managed building that document is usually what gets the roofline work approved.
